Weave Cup 2018

Updated: Oct 10, 2018

Date: August 2018 (Every Friday)

For the month of August, the clients trained for our special Weave Cup 2018. Their coach was yours truly. But of course, I couldn’t have don’t it alone if not for the volunteers who added an extra enthusiasm and energy on both first and last week. During our first session, our volunteer, Sharif and I taught the clients how to dribble, pass and shoot the ball. As this was the first attempt by the clients in playing soccer, it was inspiring to see everyone showing unwavering effort in wanting to learn to control the ball despite their individual struggles.

In the subsequent weeks, I assisted in polishing their ball handling skills, worked on their agility and instilled the idea of communication within the team. As soccer is a team-centered game, it is vital for communication to be carried out between the team. Communication skills are valuable assets not just in the key to winning the game but also, important in real-life itself. Hence, I incorporated some games which promoted bonding among the clients. At the end of the day, everyone become more vocal in asking for their teammates to pass them the ball and there were also, involvement of strategy or game plan.

On our final session, we had our regular collaborator, Hafiz Azhar, join us. While we were hoping for a good finale, 6-a-side, the weather was not on our side. Due to the heavy rain, we improvised our game, but regardless rain or shine, our day was filled with fun and laughter.

Throughout the experience of teaching the clients, I understood the importance of having good communication skills. I ensured this idea was reinforced during the training. I hope that besides improving their footwork, and having fun, the clients brought back home the knowledge of having good communication skills.
